M4 between junction 6 to 8/9 has now reopened

The M4 motorway has reopened over nine hours early having been closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 8/9 over the weekend.

The closure started at 8pm on Friday with the M4 scheduled to reopen by 6am on Monday. However, the work on several bridges has finished ahead of schedule and the motorway reopened at just after 8pm tonight.

The scheduled demolition of Huntercombe Spur bridge at Junction 7 did not take place as planned as additional work was required to the temporary bridge installed during the weekend closure of 15-18 November. This work took place over the weekend and the old bridge will be demolished in the new year.

Oldway Lane bridge, just east of junction 7, was demolished over the weekend (pictured below). This was a pedestrian/cycle bridge and it will be replaced next year. The weekend closure was also used to carry out preparation work on other bridges in this area of the M4 along with vegetation clearance and carriageway work.

Thank you for your patience over the weekend and we'll update you on the planned closures during 2020 in due course.
