M4 closure planned for this weekend is not taking place, plus next week's closures

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes and Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

  • THIS WEEKEND'S FULL CLOSURE IS CANCELLED: the M4 will not be closed in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 as the required work was completed during the closure last weekend.
  • However, there will be slip road closures this weekend: the Junction 7 westbound entry and exit slip roads will be closed all weekend, along with the eastbound entry slip road at Junction 12.
  • Next weekend : the M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 8/9 from approximately 8pm on Friday 14 August and reopen by 6am on Monday 17 August 2020 for bridge work at Lake End Road and Huntercombe Spur (J7). Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308, A332 and the A355.
  • There are also the following overnight closures scheduled next week:

  • The M4 eastbound will be closed overnight between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 8/9 (Maidenhead) on Monday 10, Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 & Thursday 13 August 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A3290, A329M, A4 & A404M.
  • Slip road closures planned for next week are as follows:

  • Junction 4 - the westbound exit and entry slips will be closed overnight on 14 August.
  • Junction 4b - the westbound exit and entry slips will be closed overnight on 12 August.
  • Junction 7 - the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 10, 11, 12 & 13 August.
  • Junction 11 - the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 10, 11, 12 & 13 August.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions. The project is continuing but all our work is under careful review in response to the Covid-19 outbreak and safety measures are in place on site to protect workers, their families and the public.
