M4 Junctions 3 to 12 smart motorway closures planned for the week commencing 3 August 2020

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes and Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

  • THIS WEEKEND'S FULL CLOSURE: the M4 is closed in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 until 6am on Monday 3 August 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A4 and the A355.
  • Next weekend: the M4 will be closed again in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 from approximately 8pm on Friday 7 and reopen by 6am on Monday 10 August 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A4 and the A355.
  • Following weekend: the M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 8/9 from approximately 8pm on Friday 14 August and reopen by 6am on Monday 17 August 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308, A332 and the A355.
  • There are also the following overnight closures scheduled next week:

  • The M4 westbound will be closed overnight between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 10 (Wokingham) on Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5 & Thursday 6 August 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A404M, A4, A329M & A3290.
  • The M4 eastbound will be closed overnight between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading) on Monday 3, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 5 & Thursday 6 August 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 & A33.
  • Slip road closures planned for next week are as follows:

  • Junction 3 - the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 3 & 4 August.
  • Junction 4b - there will be various link road closures from the M4 to the M25 (and vice versa) overnight on 3, 4 & 5 August. Please check signs to continue your journeys.
  • Junction 5 - the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 4 August.
  • Junction 7 - the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 August.
  • Junction 12 - the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 7 August.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions. The project is continuing but all our work is under careful review in response to the Covid-19 outbreak and safety measures are in place on site to protect workers, their families and the public.
