M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 11th November 2019 **including full weekend closure between junctions 6 to 8/9, 15-18 November**

M4 junctions 3 at Hayes to 12 at Theale, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes to Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

There are two full weekend closures planned over the next month including this coming weekend:

  • The M4 between junctions 6 and 8/9 will be closed in both directions from 8pm on Friday 15 November and reopening by 6am on Monday 18 November. Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308 and the A332. Strategic diversions will also be in place in the wider region using the M25, M3 and M40.
  • The M4 between junctions 6 and 8/9 will again be closed in both directions from 8pm on Friday 29 November and reopening by 6am on Monday 2 December. Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308 and the A332. Strategic diversions will also be in place in the wider region using the M25, M3 and M40.
  • The additional overnight closures are planned for the week commencing Monday 11 November:

  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 8/9 (Maidenhead) will be closed overnight on Monday 11 and Wednesday 13 November. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290, A4 and A404M.
  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 11 (Reading) and 12 (Theale) will be closed overnight on Tuesday 12 November. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A33 and A4.
  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 11 (Reading) will be closed overnight on Thursday 14 November. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290 and B3270.
  • There are also slip road closures booked as follows:

  • Junction 7 - the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 11 November.
  • Junction 7 - the eastbound entry slip will be closed on overnight 11 November.
  • Junction 12 – the eastbound entry and exit slips will be closed overnight on 11 November.
  • Junction 12 – the eastbound entry and exit slips will be closed overnight on 13 November.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.
