M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 16 December 2019

M4 junctions 3 at Hayes to 12 at Theale, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

There are overnight carriageway closures booked this week as follows.

  • Both carriageways of the M4 between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 10 (Wokingham) will be closed overnight on Monday 16 December (tonight). Diversions will be in place via the A329M, A3290, A4 and the A404M. This is for the installation of a super span portal gantry.
  • The eastbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading) will be closed overnight on Tuesday 17 December. Diversions will be in place via the A4 and the A33.
  • The westbound carriageway of the M4 between junctions 11 (Reading) and 12 (Theale) will be closed overnight on Wednesday 18 December. Diversions will be in place via the A33 and the A4.
  • There will be no more full closures after 18 December until the week commencing Monday 6 January 2020. The project shuts down on Friday 20 December for the Christmas holidays. We wish all our road users, residents, businesses and the whole community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
  • There are also slip road closures booked as follows:

  • Junction 7 - the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 17 December.
  • Junction 10 – the eastbound entry slip from the A329M southbound (slip road 4) will be closed overnight on 17 December.
  • Junction 10 – the eastbound entry slip from the A329M northbound (slip road 5) will be closed overnight on 17 December.
  • Junction 10 – the eastbound exit slip to the A329M southbound (slip road 7) will be closed overnight on 18 December.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.
