M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 16th September 2019

M4 junctions 3 at Hayes to 12 at Theale, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes to Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight between approximately 10pm and 5am (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

Please be advised of three upcoming full weekend closures (8pm Friday until 6am Monday) of the M4 in both directions this Autumn:

  • 27-30 September 2019 – between junctions 5 to 6
  • 15-18 November 2019 – between junctions 6 to 8/9
  • 29 November-2 December 2019 – junctions 6 to 8/9
  • Full closures booked for the week commencing Monday 16th September 2019 are as follows. We are now starting main works between junctions 3 and 4b:

  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 3 (Hayes) and 4b (M25) will be closed overnight on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the local network.
  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 4b (M25) and 3 (Hayes) will be closed overnight on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the local network.
  • There are also slip road closures booked as follows:

  • Junction 7 – the westbound entry and exit slips will be closed overnight on 17th September.
  • Junction 8/9 – the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 16th September.
  • Junction 8/9 – the eastbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 16th September.
  • Junction 8/9 – the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 16th September.
  • Junction 8/9 – the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 19th and 20th September.
  • Junction 10 – the westbound entry slip from the A329M northbound (slip road 2) will be closed overnight on 18th and 19th September.
  • Junction 10 – the eastbound entry from A329M southbound (slip road 4) will be closed overnight on 19th September.
  • Junction 10 – the eastbound entry from A329M northbound (slip road 5) will be closed overnight on 19th September.
  • Junction 10 – the westbound entry slip from the A329M southbound (slip road 6) will be closed overnight on 16th and 17th September.
  • Junction 11 – the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 16th September.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.
