M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 23rd September 2019

M4 junctions 3 at Hayes to 12 at Theale, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes to Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight between approximately 10pm and 5am (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

Please be advised of three upcoming full weekend closures (8pm Friday until 6am Monday) of the M4 in both directions this Autumn:

  • 27-30 September 2019 – between junctions 5 to 6
  • 15-18 November 2019 – between junctions 6 to 8/9
  • 29 November-2 December 2019 – junctions 6 to 8/9
  • Full closures booked for the week commencing Monday 23rd September 2019 are as follows:

  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 6 (Slough/Windsor) and 8/9 (Maidenhead/High Wycombe) will be closed overnight on Monday 23rd September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A332, A308, and A308M.
  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead/High Wycombe) and 6 (Slough/Windsor) will be closed overnight on Tuesday 24th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A332, A308, and A308M.
  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading) will be closed overnight on Wednesday 25th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 and A33.
  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 11 (Reading) and 12 (Theale) will be closed overnight on Thursday 26th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 and A33.
  • And, the M4 in both directions between junction 5 (Langley) and 6 (Slough/Windsor) will be closed from 8pm on Friday 27th September, all weekend until 6am Monday 30th September. The diversion route will utilise the A4 and A355 (see below) – the westbound slip roads from the M25 junction 15 to the M4 junction 4b will also be closed in order to manage traffic entering the M4. Please avoid driving in the area if possible over this weekend, and use alternative routes or methods of transport.
  • There are also slip road closures booked as follows:

  • Junction 10 – the eastbound exit slip to the A329M southbound (slip road 7) will be closed overnight on 25th and 26th September.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.
