M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 25th February 2019

M4 junction 8/9 at Maidenhead to 11 at Reading, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junction 3 at Hayes to Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight between approximately 10pm and 5am (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am). In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned works may be postponed at short notice. If works complete ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place to notify of closures.

  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 11 (Reading) and 10 (A329M) will be closed overnight on 01 March. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the B3270, A3290 and the A329M.
  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 10 to 11 will be fully closed overnight on 02 March. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the B3270, A3290 and the A329M.
  • If work is not able to go ahead as planned, then the westbound carriageway work will go ahead on 02 March with work on the eastbound carriageway going ahead on 03 March.
  • The following additional slip road closures are booked.

  • At junction 10 of the M4 eastbound the entry slip from the A329M northbound (slip 5) will be closed every night from 25 February and 01 March.
