M4 smart motorway work closure update for the week commencing 30 September 2019

M4 junctions 3 at Hayes to 12 at Theale, Berkshire: upgrade to smart motorway

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes to Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

In addition to the full closure of the M4 between junctions 5 to 6 this weekend (starting 8pm Friday 27th September until 6am Monday 30th September) we have the following closures planned during the next week:

  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 8/9 (Maidenhead/High Wycombe) will be closed overnight on Monday 30th September. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290, A4 and A404M.
  • The M4 eastbound carriageway between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading) will be closed overnight on Tuesday 1st October. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 and A33.
  • The M4 westbound carriageway between junctions 11 (Reading) and 12 (Theale) will be closed overnight on Wednesday 2nd and Friday 4th October. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 and A33.
  • The M4 between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead/High Wycombe) and 10 (Wokingham) will be closed overnight in both directions on Thursday 3rd October for the installation of a super span gantry. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290, A4 and A404M.
  • There are also slip road closures booked as follows:

  • Junction 7 – the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 4th and 6th October.
  • Junction 8/9 – the eastbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 30th September.
  • Junction 8/9 – the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 2nd October.
  • Junction 8/9 – the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 5th October.
  • Junction 11 – the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 6th October.
  • Junction 12 – the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 30th September.
  • Junction 12 – the eastbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 1st October.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions.
