M4 smart motorway work closures for the week commencing 27 July 2020

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes and Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

  • THIS WEEKEND'S FULL CLOSURE: the M4 is closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 8/9 this weekend and will reopen by 6am on Monday 27 July 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308, A332 and the A355.
  • Next weekend: the M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 from approximately 8pm on Friday 31 July and reopen by 6am on Monday 3 August 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A4 and the A355.
  • Following weekend: the M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 from approximately 8pm on Friday 7 August and reopen by 6am on Monday 10 August 2020 for bridge work. Traffic will be diverted to the A4 and the A355.
  • There are also the following overnight closures scheduled next week:

  • The M4 eastbound will be closed overnight between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 8/9 (Maidenhead) on Monday 27, Tuesday 28 & Wednesday 29 July 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290, A4 & A404M.
  • The M4 eastbound will be closed overnight between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading) on Thursday 30 July 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A4 & A33.
  • The M4 eastbound will be closed overnight between junctions 4b (M25) and 3 (Hayes) on Monday 27, Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 & Thursday 30 July 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place using local and strategic routes in the area.
  • Slip road closures planned for next week are as follows:

  • Junction 6 - the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 28 & 29 July.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions. The project is continuing but all our work is under careful review in response to the Covid-19 outbreak and safety measures are in place on site to protect workers, their families and the public.
