M4 weekend closure between junctions 6 and 8/9 is going ahead tonight, plus next weeks closures

Work to improve journeys by converting the M4 into a smart motorway between Junctions 3 at Hayes and Junction 12 at Theale continues this week. 24 hour narrow lanes and a 50mph speed restriction are in place for sections of this stretch of the M4. Carriageway and slip road closures are planned as follows, all fully closed overnight (traffic management will usually be rolled out from 9pm and taken off by 6am).

  • THIS WEEKEND: the M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 6 and 8/9 from approximately 8pmthis evening and reopen by 6am on Monday 17 August 2020 for bridge work at Lake End Road and Huntercombe Spur (J7). Traffic will be diverted to the A308M, A308, A332 and the A355.
  • The next weekend closures will be between Junctions 5 and 4b (eastbound) over the weekend of 4 to 7 September and Junctions 4b and 5 (westbound) over the weekend of 11 to 14 September.
  • There are also the following overnight closures scheduled next week:

  • The M4 westbound will be closed overnight between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 10 (Wokingham) on Monday 17, Tuesday 18 & Wednesday 19 August 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A404M, A4, A3290 & A329M.
  • The M4 westbound will be closed overnight between junctions 10 (Wokingham) and 11 (Reading) on Thursday 20 & Friday 21 August 2020. Clearly signed diversions will be in place utilising the A329M, A3290 & B3270.
  • Slip road closures planned for next week are as follows:

  • Junction 4 - the westbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 16 August.
  • Junction 4 - the eastbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 17 August.
  • Junction 4 - the westbound entry slip will be closed overnight on 18 August.
  • Junction 11 - the eastbound exit slip will be closed overnight on 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 August.
  • In the event of poor weather conditions or other issues out of our control, planned work may be postponed at short notice. Contingency bookings are also in place, but these are only used if previously planned work is delayed and there is no clash with other closures. If work completes on an earlier day the motorway may not close, or if work completes ahead of schedule the motorway may reopen early. Signage will be in place on the network to notify of closures and diversions. The project is continuing but all our work is under careful review in response to the Covid-19 outbreak and safety measures are in place on site to protect workers, their families and the public.
